1945年イングランド州東部サリー州のウスター・パーク生まれ。現代本格派の一人。 ロンドンのパブリック。スクール、ダリッチ・カレッジからオックスフォード大学のワダム・カレッジに進み､英語学を学び優秀な成績を収めるかたわらＯＵＤＳ（オックスフォード大学演劇クラブ）の部長として活躍し､自らもキャバレーのフロアショーやレビューに出演した経験をもつ。 1967年にはエジンバラ・フェスティバル・フリンジでオックスフォード・シアター・グループによる深夜ショーの演出を手がける。 大学卒業後の1967年にＢＢＣに入社し､１０年にわたって軽演劇担当のラジオ・プロデューサーとして娯楽番組を担当。その間､作家組合から1973年度最優秀ラジオ特別番組台本賞を受賞。その一方で舞台劇にも手を染め、1970年には最初の劇作Mrs.Gladys Moxonがロンドンで上演された。 1978年から1945年にかけてはロンドンのウィークエンド・テレビの演劇プロデューサーに転進して番組制作にたずさわり、その後も数多くのラジオやテレビ向けの脚本を書き下ろしている。 セイヤーズのピーター卿のラジオ・シリーズを手がけ､その饒舌さに惹かれてミステリーを書き始めた。 デビュー作は1975年の『邪魔な役者は消えていく』である。 1986〜1987年にはＣＷＡ（イギリス推理作家協会）の会長を務めた。 |
